LGA Summer Film Workshop

I just finished teaching a 3-week summer film workshop in association with Looking Glass Arts. The workshop took a group of high school filmmakers and actors through a full production process: writing to storyboarding to shooting+ lighting to editing and scoring.

Everyone involved is pretty amazing - especially the student filmmakers who are an amazingly bright, talented, creative group of people.

Through and through, they made some wonderful short films. I loved working with them and hope they all stay in touch.

Donnybrook Photo Shoot Time Lapse

Over the weekend we participated in a photoshoot for the Donnybrook Writing Academy directed by our talented and charming friend, photographer and artist Nina Barry. The shoot was a blast and the resulting photos are rather attractive, if we say so ourselves (you can see them here). James Darling was in town with his fancy new HD Camera and shot this great time lapse of one of the setups. Josh threw it together with a spot of music, popped it online and here we are — Enjoy!

The Denver Post + Rocky Mountain News feature Lowered Expectations

Thanks to our good friend Brit Horvat, this week over at yourhub.com they printed a silly little article I wrote about the production of Lowered Expectations and its conception. Through a magical and tortuous route, it eventually found its way to the cover of the yourhub section of both the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News this week. Sneak Peek at Lowered Expectations Episode 03

Photos! A couple of weeks ago we wrapped production on Lowered Expectations Episode 03 - the Dream Analyst.
The shoot went swimmingly. I think we have a lot of great material and some really fun/funny performances from the cast. I’ve started cutting and it’s all coming together really well. There are also a few fun effects to watch out for (check out the last photo in the set for a sneak preview). Those are going to take a bit longer in post-production, though we’re hoping to pull everything together in the next couple of weeks for an early September release.

Episode 03 features: Josh Shayne, Tyler Mark, Vanessa Barcus, Tasha Shayne, Vic Shayne, and Janice Shayne. Cinematography by Jason Lange.

Lowered Expectations Episode 02 - Easter Island

Editing on Lowered Expectations Episode 02 - Easter Island is complete!

This was a fast-paced production all the way down the line. Shot in 2 days and edited in a week and a half to meet our deadline, we’re going to need a bit of a rest over the weekend. But it was all worth it. We’re particularly happy with the level of production design in this episode - from colorful pie charts to complicated, cardboard Easter Island Head Costumes - engineered and constructed by Janice - we are continuing to push the boundaries of what you can produce on a zero budget.

Easter Island Shorts

Episode 02 is almost ready, but in the meantime check out these shorts! During the production of episode 02, we took some extra time to shoot a couple of Easter Island shorts using the amazing GIANT HEAD costumes created by Janice Shayne. They were really too amazing-looking to not put to good use, plus, in all this hot weather, they were rather shady.

Lowered Expectations Trailers

For the last couple months, we’ve been hard at work on creating the first episode in what we hope will be a continuing web series — Lowered Expectations. The show will be a comedy revolving around Josh, a filmmaker who, after losing a career-making film deal, has no choice but to leave New York and move home with his parents in Boulder, Colorado.

Starring writer/director Josh Shayne’s real family — his co-writer Vic Shayne, sister Tasha and mom Janice (in addition to numerous friends and acquaintances), the show is not quite reality, not quite fiction. We’ll leave it to you to figure out exactly where the lines blur.

The official premiere of Episode One is Friday July 6th, 2007. However, for those of you who can’t wait, we’ve shot a couple of trailers for the show and are posting them here on Floating Lightbulb Films.
